The 2016 USA Masters Games is finishing with a bang over the final weekend of events with competition in 11 sports.
Competition continues today in Track & Field at Irwin Belk Track at NC A&T State University. Track & Field athletes from as far as India are competing in a variety of events including the weight throw, 100-meter dash, and 500-meter racewalk. The field includes Olympians Willie Banks and Zola Budd Pieterse, among others. Also continuing today is Tennis at Spencer Love Tennis Center where more than 50 athletes take the courts.
New sports getting underway today include Basketball, Ice Hockey and Table Tennis at the Greensboro Coliseum Complex, Diving and Synchronized Swimming at the Greensboro Aquatic Center, and Soccer at the Bryan Park Soccer Complex. All competitions start at 9 a.m. with the exception of Soccer which begins at 6:30 p.m.
“We wanted to make sure the Games conclude on a high note,” said Hill Carrow, CEO of the USA Masters Games. With the six new sports starting today, joining Track & Field and Tennis already in progress, and three more sports before the weekend is done, no one can say the inaugural USA Masters Games are cruising to the finish line. In fact, we will conclude with a flourish as our Closing Ceremonies on Sunday night bring the historic Games to a celebratory close.”
All eight of the above sports continue on Saturday, where they are joined by additional sports Functional Fitness and Weightlifting which start at 9 a.m. at the Greensboro Sportsplex.
Then on Sunday, July 31, 2016 the final day of the USA Masters Games, the day gets underway early with the 10K Road Race, which starts and ends on the Greensboro Coliseum Complex campus, at 8 a.m. Basketball, Diving, Ice Hockey, Soccer, Synchronized Swimming, Table Tennis, and Track & Field all conclude their competitions on Sunday.
The Games wrap up with a Closing Ceremony celebration at White Oak Amphitheatre on the Greensboro Coliseum Complex. The Ceremony begins at 6:45 p.m. and concludes at 8:45 p.m. The Ceremony will feature a concert by the band Sleeping Booty, but there will also be closing remarks, recognition of volunteers and sponsors, a flyover, and the big reveal of the host site of the 2018 USA Masters Games.
All sports competitions as well as Closing Ceremonies are free to the public and all are invited to attend.
