Highlighted by three games against Atlantic Coast Conference foes and three in-state rivalry games at home, UNCG men’s basketball head coach Wes Miller announced the Spartans’ schedule for the 2017-18 season Wednesday afternoon. The Spartans will play 17 games at home, including 13 in the Greensboro Coliseum, as they open with four of their first five games in Greensboro.
“We are excited about our 2017-18 schedule,” Miller said. “This schedule will challenge us in the non-conference play and help prepare us for Southern Conference action. The SoCon will be ultra-competitive again this year after one of the best seasons in league play in recent memory.”
The UNCG Athletic Department has set a goal of selling 1,000 season tickets. It would mark the first time in program history to break 1,000-season tickets. Season tickets start at $129 in the lower level, $159 in the risers (with Spartan Club donation) and $450 for courtside seating (with Spartan Club Donation). All season tickets come with a complimentary parking pass at the Greensboro Coliseum. The Spartans open the season Nov. 10 in Charlottesville as they have a return trip to face Virginia, which finished the season ranked No. 24 by the Associated Press. The Cavaliers posted a 23-11 overall record last season and advanced to the NCAA Tournament second round.
The Spartans open the home portion of the schedule with two straight games held on campus at Fleming Gymnasium. UNCG will welcome in North Carolina Wesleyan Nov. 15 and Ferrum College Nov. 17 as part of the UNCG Spartan Classic. The event will continue the following week when the Spartans hold their Greensboro Coliseum opener Nov. 20, welcoming in Delaware from the Colonial Athletic Conference.
UNCG closes out the UNCG Spartan Classic Nov. 21 with a matchup against the fourth team in the event, the Longwood Lancers. The Spartans will play their second game against an ACC opponent on Black Friday when they travel to Winston-Salem for a meeting with Wake Forest. This marks the 11th meeting all-time between the Triad teams and the second-straight season they have met after the Demon Deacons escaped the Greensboro Coliseum with a 78-75 victory.
The Spartans hit the road for games at Presbyterian (Nov. 28) and at Liberty (Dec. 2) before beginning a stretch of five out of seven games at home in the month of December. UNCG begins that stretch Dec. 7 welcoming in former SoCon rival Elon, the first meeting between the two teams since 2015. The Spartans continue their games agaisnt in-state foes Dec. 13 when they welcome in UNCW for the first of a home-and-home series.
UNCG plays its third and final ACC opponent of the year Dec. 16 when it travels to PNC Arena in Raleigh to face off against the N.C. State Wolfpack. The Spartans last met N.C. State in 2015, falling 58-52 on the road. UNCG returns home for two games before the holiday break, welcoming in UNC Asheville (Dec. 19) and Southeastern (Dec. 21) for the final non-conference game.
Southern Conference play begins after the holiday break as the Spartans play an 18-game league schedule featuring home-and-home series against all nine other league foes. UNCG opens league play in the Greensboro Coliseum, welcoming in Wofford Dec. 30 for the final game of the calendar year.
SoCon play continues in January when UNCG plays five of eight games on the road beginning with games at VMI (Jan. 6), at ETSU (Jan. 11) and at Western Carolina (Jan. 13). The Spartans return home for three straight homes against The Citadel (Jan. 18), Mercer (Jan. 20) and Furman (Jan. 24) before closing out the month at Samford (Jan. 27) and at Chattanooga (Jan. 29).
February begins with a home game versus VMI (Feb. 1) before a trip to Greenville to face Furman (Feb. 7). The Spartans’ lone SoCon game on campus at Fleming Gymnasium is set for Feb. 10 against Western Carolina. UNCG will face off against ETSU at home Feb. 12 in a rematch of the SoCon Tournament Championship game. UNCG hits the road for three-straight at The Citadel (Feb. 15), at Mercer (Feb. 17) and at Wofford (Feb. 20), before closing out the regular season at home against Chattanooga (Feb. 23) and Samford (Feb. 25).
The 2018 Southern Conference Tournament will once again be played in Asheville at the U.S. Cellular Center March 2-56. All 10 teams qualify for the tournament with the top four seeds earning a bye into the quarterfinals Saturday. The SoCon Tournament Final will be held Monday, March 5.
